With Christmas approaching way faster than I want to think about, I was thinking about holiday traditions. Most of us have them, those things that just make the holiday seem real for us. I’ve given up a lot of the ones I had as a kid, or when my kids were young. Some were pretty normal, but we tend towards the odd and unique here, so there were some that no one else I know does. There are the rice people we got from a baby sitter in Denmark, little pipe cleaner people that got set up on December 1st. There was a little walnut shell cup that held a grain of rice for each one for every day until Christmas. Each night a portion of the rice would disappear, until it was all gone on Christmas morning. I remember being so mystified by that as a little kid.
When my kiddos were little, we celebrated Christmas and Hannakah. No, not the tiniest bit Jewish. But it was fun introducing them to different ideas, and who doesn’t love latkes? And we would make about a ton of cookies. The one that was imperative was Mexican Wedding Cakes. I also got several cookie guns at thrift stores so that everyone could have their own for making Spritz cookies, and tinted the dough different colors for each one. Every year we all got a new ornament for the tree, a tradition started by my mom for me.
My favorite has to be Christmas Eve dinner. We lived in Paris for 4 years when I was young, and the first year there my folks made the mistake of asking me and my sister what we wanted for Christmas Eve dinner. Being from Southern California, and having not been back to the U.S. for quite some time, we chose tacos. Probably not a big problem now, but way back then the px was not an option if you were not in the military (we were not). Somehow my dad managed to get a can of tortillas and some enchilada sauce, and we got what we had asked for. Somehow that idea stuck, and we still do it 40+ years later. One of my favorite memories of my sweetie’s dad was the first Christmas we were going to spend with him and his wife. I had made peace with the idea that I was going to have to forgo my tacos. The kids and SigOt went over the day before me, but I had to work that morning, so I ended up walking in the door about 4pm. His dad met me at the door, and asked if I would mind cooking. He had gone to the store all by himself and bought everything he thought I would need to make tacos for dinner. The kids admitted mentioning it, but he had made the decision all on his own, and I am still touched by his thoughfulness.
Now for the giveaway: In honor of the holidays (and http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/2011/11/giveaway-day-december-12/), I am going to give away your choice of either a skein of hand-dyed sock yarn or two 2-ounce batts. I will pick at random from the comments to this post. Just leave a comment before December 16th at 8 pm PST of what your favorite holiday tradition is, and which one of the following you want to win. Fine print: you have to live in the U.S. (sorry, no international shipping). I’ll post the winner on December 18th. Here are the choices:
Batts first. Each batt is 2 ounces. If you pick this you will get 2 batts (so a total of 4 ounces). All of these were done on my Patrick Green carder.
First up is “Dying Embers”, superwash.
Next is “Tropical Waters”, also superwash.
Then we have “Fire & Ice”, a blend of Romney cross wool and hand dyed mohair.
And last but not least, we have “Stormy Waters”, again a Romney/hand dyed mohair blend
Now for the sock yarn choices. Each of these skeins is 4 ounces, 400+ yards, so plenty for a pair of socks.
First up is “Peacock Feathers”, a blend of blues and purples.
Second is “Autumn Leaves, a mixture of yellows, oranges and brown, with a hint of green.
Third is “Strawberry Fields”, red, white and green.
Fourth we have “Very Berry”, a mixture of pinks.
And finally, we have “Victorian Christmas”, which is burgandy, gold, and pine green.
If you don’t win and see something you don’t think you can live without, check out my Etsy shop (link on the right). And who knows, I may get a wild hair and more than one of you may get lucky…
ETA – Wow, I am overwhelmed by all the nice comments, and I love all the cool traditions you all have. Hopefully one or two of you will come back and visit from time to time, and I sure wouldn’t object if you wanted to get something from my Etsy store.
I couldn’t stand the suspense anymore, so I went ahead and pulled winners numbers tonite. Because of the number of responses I got, I picked two people instead of one, and they have both been e-mailed. So, without further to-do, I give you my winners:
Becca, “Tropical Waters would be my choice I think. Hard to choose, all so beautiful! My fav tradition is the jammie present on Xmas eve, little ones in new comfy jammies, who can resist!”
and ElfRenee, “My favorite tradition is decorating the tree! And I love the Victorian Christmas yarn!!”

I always look forward to visiting with friends at an open house on Christmas Eve. It is the only time during the year that we see some of these people, but it has been magical to watch as we have all grown older, married, had children, and gone through the changes that life throws at us.
The Very Berry sock yarn is gorgeous!
December 12, 2011 at 10:53 am |
I have two – one is making cookies. I love making cookies to give to people. The past two years, I’ve made them with my niece.
I also have started participating in holiday card exchanges – it’s a fun way to give and get more cards – I also sign my niece up, and send her cards for her, and then she gets a bunch of cards as well!
December 12, 2011 at 10:55 am |
I love the Victorian Christmas with the autumn leaves a close second. i don’t know if it counts as a tradition, but our boxer dog loves to lie under the tree and guard the presents. He growls if the other dog and cat come anywhere near it. He also gets to open his present first each year so I guess that counts as a tradition!
December 12, 2011 at 11:21 am |

This is such a lovely giveaway. I am amazed by everyone’s generosity! I love all things Christmas related, but my absolute favorite tradition is my family’s Ukrainian Christmas Eve. We gather at my grandparents’ house when the first star comes out, before dinner my grandfather leads us in “Silent Night” in English, he then sings it Ukrainian (brings tears to my eyes everytime) and then we eat. It is a festive meal of varenyky, borsch, holuptsi and fried fish.
All of your yarn is gorgeous, but I am especially drawn to the batts of superwash – dying embers and tropical waters.
December 12, 2011 at 1:14 pm |
I love Victorian Christmas! My favorite Christmas tradition is our Advent Wreath – helps remind us what this wonderful season is all about! Merry Christmas
December 12, 2011 at 1:29 pm |
Well, this is the year of new traditions, but I have always loved using Christmas day for reading and knitting.
Maybe one of my new traditions could be a Victorian Christmas… 😀
December 12, 2011 at 1:29 pm |
My favorite holiday tradition is making Christmas cookies with my family. I do the baking and mixing of frosting and my husband and children decorate.
All of the batts are so pretty, I’m having a hard time making up my mind. “Dyeing embers” or “fire and ice” are probably my two top choices.
December 12, 2011 at 1:57 pm |
I love spending time with family and cooking together. The yarn looks very yummy – thanks for the giveaway!
December 12, 2011 at 2:54 pm |
Wow – Autumn Leaves and Peacock are my absolute favorites, but all are lovely. I have come back to yarn after a bit of a hiatus and it’s such fun to see and use gorgeousness!
December 12, 2011 at 2:58 pm |
My favorite tradition growing up was standing around the tree Christmas Eve singing German Christmas songs and then opening the gifts from overseas. I hope to carry on some of that tradition with my children and teach them the songs I grew up with.
Love the Peacock Feathers and Autumn Leaves!
December 12, 2011 at 3:36 pm |
I am positively drooling over the yarn! The Autumn Leaves colorway especially. Yum!
My favorite tradition is Christmas Eve with my family. My kids each open two gifts: a new set of Christmas pj’s and a new ornament for the tree. Then we all sit together and read the story of the first Christmas.
December 12, 2011 at 3:40 pm |
What a lovely story! We have a new tradition that started last year. Instead of having an advent calendar, I wrap a book for my children to open each night beginning on Dec 1st. We all eat a sweet treat and read a holiday book by the fire. It is magical. Thanks for the giveaway, I LOVE the batt of Tropical Waters. We raise sheep and I also spin, dye, and knit! Always wonderful to learn of other fiber artists.

These are absolutely beautiful — so hard to narrow it down, but I think I’d go with the autumn fields skein (the dying embers batts are just stunning, tho!) Thanks for sharing the taco story — that’s great! My favorite holiday tradition is going out to see the Christmas Revels here in Cambridge, MA — I’ve been going since I was a little kid, and every year I recruit more people from outside the family to go!
December 12, 2011 at 6:47 pm |
The sock yarn looks divine!
I like how you celebrate all the major holidays. I am not so organized and am just lucky to do Christmas alright! My favorite tradition is going to the candlelight service on Christmas Eve. Then we drive around the neighborhood to look at the lights and decorations. We scout the sky for Santa and have even see a red light fly across the sky! My kids are young enough to believe it’s Rudolph and Santa.

The tropical waters is delightful.
My favorite family tradition is walking along the clifftops with my extended family – whenever we’re all in the same place, whether for a family event or holiday we end up going for a walk, either in the hills or along the beach. I miss that now that I live in Chicago (my family are all in the northeast of England) so now it’s even more special.

I like the fields sock the best. My favorite tradition is elf on the shelf!
December 13, 2011 at 3:53 am |

December 13, 2011 at 5:48 am |
The peacock feathers is *gorgeous*!
My favorite tradition is one that my husband and I do. Instead of wrapping the gifts every year, we hide them around the house and have scavenger hunts Christmas morning!
December 13, 2011 at 6:45 am |
Unfortunately, I’ve found myself in a situation this year where old traditions won’t hold. I’m in a new city, far from any family, and I have to work both the night of Christmas Eve and the night of Christmas (and I’m on call for Christmas itself, which is asking for it- if I don’t work 30 hours I’ll be surprised). But hey, someone’s got to do it. Still, I’m trying to start a new tradition, beginning with my first annual Christmas cookie exchange (this coming Sunday- nom nom nom!)
December 13, 2011 at 7:53 am |
That tropical waters is beautiful!
My favorite tradition – we each get to open one package on Christmas Eve. In it – a pair of pajamas. That way, when we get up Christmas morning, our photos aren’t completely a nightmare, at least we are in cute jammies!

I would have a hard time choosing between Peacock Feathers and Fire and Ice. All your work was simply beautiful. Hard to answer really on the traditions at the moment we are an untraditional family. Separated but living in the same home with our 19 yr. old son who is mildly autistic. He comes first and needs to feel secure so with that, I can say that we will enjoy hot chocolate together, drive around to see Christmas lights for a little while and tonight he asked if I wanted to put up lights outside – a first interest in it!! That was a milestone and can be a happy new tradition. Too much sharing…hope not – I think it’s better to go with my initial thought than to just give a box answer.

My favorite holiday tradition is when I head down to the parents’ house, and Mom and I spend the day trimming the tree. Every ornament we bring out has a story, and we chat about who gave it to whom, where it came from, who did what to it when, remember the year it fell off the tree, etc etc. We drink tea, munch on Chex Mix, and have a great time while Dad has a great time taking long naps. LOL

I love painting cookies with my sisters and mom while laughing about old stories and listening to music.
All the colors are so pretty–I love blue the best so I’d love the Peacock Feathers.

My favorite holiday tradition is on Christmas morning, after all of the presents are open we sit down and have German Pancakes with cinnamon apples and Cool Whip on top. My mom started this tradition when my siblings and I were little and I carried on the tradition once I became a mom. It doesn’t feel like Christmas without it.
I would choose Dying Embers or Fire and Ice, both are stunning!! Thank you so much for the chance at winning! Happy Holidays!!

I love the tropical wash color! Beautiful. We are still working on creating some traditions in our family… I think one that is going to stick is a pot of chocolate fondue and whatever we can find to dip in it on christmas eve =)

What beautiful fibers! I think that peacock feathers yarn would probably be my favorite based on the description (the pic isn’t showing for me) and the Berry yarn one is my favorite of the pics that do show up.
I think my favorite Christmas tradition is being together with family.

Oh, definitely Autumn Leaves. Beautiful.
My favorite tradition is the day my family finds and decorates the tree. We have a crab soup dinner and then spiced cider and roasted chestnuts for dessert. Eggnog for the boys. 🙂

Dying embers or Fire N Ice!
My favorite holiday tradition is our work cookie exchange! This year we had 6 participants, so everyone made 5 dozen cookies – 1 dozen for each of the other participants. I take all the cookies (or candies) and make gift boxes for our family. Luckily, all of the family recieving these boxes LOVE getting a yummy assortment of handmade AWESOME!
Thank you!

My favorite tradition is to take a vacation day a week or two before Christmas, get up at normal time and spend the whole day baking. I’m exhausted at the end, but all my treats are finished. I’d love one of your sock yarns but I can’t decide – surprise me?
December 15, 2011 at 7:14 pm |
Oh my. Your yarns are just breathtaking! I’m not even sure I could choose. Peacock is what I would generally choose, but that Strawberry Fields and Very Berry, while out of my normal range are very compelling.
Oh, and favorite holiday tradition? It’s simple, but I really love lying under the Christmas tree with my girls.

My favorite tradition is on Christmas Eve- my mom makes a special kind of cookie every year that we eat with spiced (and sometimes spiked!) eggnog while watching A Christmas Carol near the fire. It’s such a relaxing moment!

I love the peacock feathers sock yarn–gorgeous!

the “Stormy Waters” is really lovely. Though we celebrate Hanukkah with his family and Christmas with mine, my husband and I aren’t big into the holidays. However, I do enjoy my family’s enchiladas-for-breakfast tradition and his chinesefood day tradition (eating at a chinese food buffet on christmas day).

I’m torn between the sock yarns, they are all gorgeous. I think it’s down to the victorian christmas and the autumn leaves. We have two young kiddos so we’re having fun establishing new traditions. We buy them a new ornament each year and started doing the elf on the shelf this year.

Peacock feathers may be my favorite. Thank you.
My favorite holiday tradition is running into my parents’ room on Christmas morning with my sister, yelling, “He’s been here! He’s been here!” We’re 37 and 38, and we STILL do this! (With help from our own little ones, now, of course). 🙂
Thanks so much!

When I first got here and saw the deadline I had mixed feelings because the choices would be hard to pick! Then I realized that it’s 9:30 eastern here, so I could still slip in under the deadline!
Funny you celebrated both christian and Jewish holidays. When we homeschooled, we celebrated the Feast of Booths and a Messianic Passover. I think I still love Christmas best though. A favorite tradition was going driving to look at Christmas lights on Christmas eve, while listening to Dickens Christmas Carol in the car. Afterward we always stopped for ice cream, no matter how cold it was outside! It always made the day special.
My choice would be ….. oh gosh, I can’t decide. Okay, the Autumn Leaves sock yarn! They’re all too pretty really.
